Dental Assistant

OBJECTIVE:                   To prepare individuals for entry level positions as a Dental Assistant.
PREREQUISITE:             High School Diploma or GED or equivalent

Dental Assistants perform a wide array of clinical and administrative duties under the supervision of a dentist. They assist the dentist during dental examinations and treatments, such as preparing the patient, taking x-rays, sterilizing instruments, assisting with instruments and materials, and instructing patients about general and post-operative oral health care. Dental assistants may also have administrative duties, including scheduling appointments, maintaining patient files, and billing for services. Dental Assistants work with dentists, dental hygienists, dental office receptionists and dental lab technicians providing dental care to patients. Above all, Dental Assistants become a second pair of hands for the Dentist.   The program is a 900 hour program with 600 hours of in house skills and theory and an internship of 300 hours at the end of the classroom training will help you apply the skills that you have learnt in an actual office environment.   This certificate of completion will not make a graduate eligible to become licensed as a Certified Dental Assistant by the New York State Education Department, Office of Professions.

As a Dental Assistant you enter one of the fastest growing healthcare careers in New York and much of the country.  According to US department Of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for Dental Assistants nationwide was $33,230.  During the same period, the median hourly wage for Dental Assistants in Metropolitan New York including Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island and Nassau and Suffolk Counties was $16.93.  Further, job prospects for Dental Assistants are expected to be excellent for both full-time and part-time employment.
